AI ethics, in public.

We design our games ourselves: the rules, the worlds, the boards and the art. Where we use AI tools is engineering, and in one game, Large Language Murder, where the AI is the product and says so. We think that obligates us to be open about how, and to update what we say as the work and the tools both change.

Engineering, not vibe coding

There is a way of making software now where you describe what you want to a model, take whatever comes back, and ship it if it seems to run. That is not what happens here. We are engineers, with more than forty years of commercial software engineering for Fortune 10 companies behind us.

AI tools help us write and test code, build every game for phones, tablets and Macs, and run this website. We decide the architecture, set the rules the code has to meet, read what the tools write, and hold every change to gates that must pass before anything reaches a player: automated tests, builds for every platform, and checks of the finished game on real devices. A tool that writes code does not get to decide what the code is for, or whether it is good enough to ship.

Where AI shows up in our products

Large Language Murder — where the AI is the product

One device goes round a table. Everybody answers the same one-word prompt in one to six short words, and so does an AI. Then everybody votes for the answer they think the AI wrote. The premise is the disclosure — nobody at that table has been told anything except that an AI is playing, and every round ends by naming which card was its. There is a mode that turns the table round, too: in HIDE you are the only person in the room, the AIs are the jury, and what they are hunting is you. That one needs a live model, so it needs a key of your own — the game as specified, and the way most people will play it, needs neither.

Because this is the product where we could most easily be vague, here is the whole of it:

What is sent, when, and what never leaves the device is set out in full in its privacy policy.
